The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 11Months passed and Whisper became more rideable. She was now to the point where she would canter on either lead with or without another horse in the arena. She had proven to be very sure footed and reliable as long as she didn't spook. Amy had created a small but well-made trail in the woods, about half a mile long. This was the first time that Whisper would be in the woods, so Amy had brought Dodge out bareback to keep her company. As it turned out, there was no need. Whisper loved the woods and was soon pulling on the bit. After exchanging a glance with Amy, Sarah allowed her horse to pick up the pace into a quick trot which then merged into a canter. The little mare loved it. She flew through the woods without any signs of her usual spookiness. All too quickly the trail ended, and the girls headed up to the arena to finish their ride.
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 10Amy went to Dodge, untied him from the hitching post, and slipped the bridle over his head. She quickly mounted and after a brief warm-up walk asked for a trot then a canter. She focused on the feeling of wind in her hair and the motion of Dodge's powerful muscles stretching and tightening under the saddle. Amy felt as if she could read her horses every thought. She felt herself merge into the state where it felt that she and the horse were one. They were one creature moving on its own with swift and graceful strides. The slightest shift in Amy's weight caused Dodge to respond. She angled her horse towards the jump in the center of the arena. She could sense every footfall, every breath, of the big bay stallion beneath her almost like they were hers. She could sense his muscles coil just as she herself could feel her muscles stretch into a huge release as he flew over the jump. As they landed on the other side Amy let out a laugh of pure joy. Jumping was the closest she would ever get
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 9Sarah carefully climbed into the new saddle. Whisper shifted her weight and raised her head, confusion in her eyes. Sarah talked to her soothingly and the mare lowered her head and calmed. Amy smiled at Sarah. This was the first time that Whisper had let anyone mount her. Sarah and Amy had worked tirelessly for the past month to get the skittish mare under saddle. She had gotten much friendlier and had formed a strong bond with Sarah along the way. Tentatively Sarah urged the little black mare into a walk. After weeks of lunging with a saddle Whisper seemed to have gotten used to wearing tack. The feel of a person on her back still threw her off a little but she seemed to be good with it so far. Even so, they decided to stop riding after a few laps of walking around the arena. Sarah slid off and brought Whisper into the barn to untack and bond with her horse.
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 8Wild Whisper bolted out of the trailer and stood in the center of the paddock, staring at the people gathered around her. The black mustang sniffed the air and with unsure movements she turned to Dodge. Amy had put Dodge in the paddock furthest from Sarah's new horse but he was still close enough to comfort the mare. Amy leaned towards Sarah. "And how exactly did you get her?" "Ad in the newspaper", Sarah answered, "She looks like a project horse." As they watched, Dodge offered a friendly nicker and the mare trotted over to the edge of her fence to try to sniff his nose. Seeing another horse seemed to calm her down a lot. As she settled down and began to nervously nibble at the grass around her, Amy noticed that the most striking thing about the little mare was her bright blue eyes, despite her black coat. Amy knew that that never happened in black horses; perhaps there was something else in her genes. It didn't really matter anyway. Now Dodge had a friend, and Amy's own friend had he
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 7A few days later Amy unloaded Dodge from the horse trailer into his little paddock. The property wasn't huge but it was a good size anyway. Whatever three times that guy's pay was it must have been a lot because it seemed like he had a lot already. There was a small but sturdy 6 stalled barn. And 6, again small, but nice paddocks with long green grass. There was even a small sandy arena with a jump or two. The best of all was a little 2 roomed house! This property was all Amy could have dreamed of and it was just mind-blowing that it had all of this stuff on it. It was heaven for Amy. Everything about this farm was small. No huge barn and miles of trails. Actually there were no trails, but that wasn't a problem. Especially considering the nice (you guessed it – small) 2 acre pastures. They were next to each other but separated by a fence. Amy was waiting to wake up as she walked into the smaller of the 2 rooms in the little house. She imagined her bed and show ribbons in the room. She
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 6"What?" Sarah screamed, "Call now and put it on speaker!." Amy laughed and pulled her phone from her back pocket. She found the number for the property and called. A gruff sounding man answered. "Hello?" Amy and Sarah both smiled and Amy said, "Hey! Are you the one selling the 10 acres of land?" "Yes. Are you interested?" Amy answered, "Yeah, but I only have 7,000 dollars right now. Can I pay for it over time?" "You know what? Just give me the 7 grand and you can have it." Amy was worried what that could mean about the property. Did it mean that it was so awful that the man was desperate to get rid of it? "Uhm thanks! Any reason you want to sell it so cheap?" The man's voice changed and it sounded excited and proud. "I just scored a job in New York that gets me almost triple the money I have here and I have until the end of the month to get out there and accept! You know what? Come by tomorrow and I will have everything ready for you! All you have to do is sign some paper." Amy couldn'
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 5Rachael jumped at the sound of the door slamming. She swept her short, dark brown hair from her eyes and turned to see a sweaty and excited Amy coming her way. She was smiling, which Rachael knew hardly ever happened anymore. "What's going on?" she asked Amy. Amy told Rachael about the property for sale. As she talked Amy began to realize how unlikely it was that this would happen and so she ended her description by awkwardly fading into silence. Rachael almost laughed at the irony of this. For the past few months she had been contemplating about purchasing a small farm for Amy to keep Dodge. Horses seemed to be the only thing that put Amy in a good mood. And now right in front of her was her sister telling her about what seemed to be the perfect place. Seeing Amy's now hopeless face, she said "We can take a look. But I'm not promising anything." Amy's jaw dropped. "You mean it?" she asked breathlessly. "Yes." Rachael said. "They found a bank account that no one knew about but our pare
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 4The sound of clopping hooves broke the stifling summer quietness. Two horses and riders turned a bend in the one way road. A slender girl with bright red hair, atop a tall bay stallion with a matching shiny coat and another girl, a blond, on a short chestnut gelding rode into view. The red head made a quick check for cars and pushed her horse into a slow collected canter. "Hey! Wait up Amy!" the blond girl called, urging her horse into a canter as well. Amy turned in her saddle and grinned, something rarely seen from her, and called back "Well come on then, Sarah! Get that pony to move!" And with that she turned back to her horse and whispered, "Let's go Dodge." She sped up her horse's slow canter to a near gallop. Sarah grinned too and pushed the lazy horse into a gallop, quickly catching up to Amy and Dodge. They galloped along the road for a short distance, enjoying the breeze their horses created and the feeling of freedom both felt when riding. Soon, not wanting to tire out the ho
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 3From the moment Dodge (who is shown as Hit It Hard) and Amy met outside the police station that tragic day, they have been inseparable. Amy had always ridden horses but ever since her parents' death she had thrown herself into her riding and seemed to know nothing else that went on in the world. She learned many different riding styles and won hundreds of show ribbons on her new partner. It wasn't just riding that she became better at; she grew to understand the horses. She knew exactly how they thought and could calm even the highest strung or most spooked stallion. People on the other hand, she seemed to distance herself from. She would hardly mumble a greeting to other people at the boarding stable on her way to catch Dodge. This continued for about a year or so until a shy girl, Sarah, finally tried to be her friend. Most people had tried to break through to Amy with force, but Sarah was different. All she did was match Amy's pace as they went to get their horses from pasture. Sara
pray into my collarbone
let your snake tongue slither
with the syllables.
i wish for soft-chested nights,
and the trickle of champagne down crystal glass.
poppy-lips, lull me to sleep,
nurse my coiling tongue with yours;
tap my scalp like a silent drum,
and wind my hair in between your fingers
like broken guitar strings.
(serenade me with the buzz of pollen in your kiss.)
