The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 20A few days later, at the breakfast table, Amy jumped as Rachael screamed and dropped her coffee. "Rachael what happened?" Amy asked, nervous. "We won the lottery!" Rachael yelled! "Are you serious?" Amy shouted! "Yes, look!" Amy looked at the newspaper. What she saw almost made her pass out. "400 million." Amy whispered weakly. "Oh my god."
About an hour later they were millionaires. Amy of course called Sarah right away. Sarah couldn't believe it and was in complete denial until Rachael confirmed the news. Now the possibilities for their lives were nearly infinite and neither Amy nor Rachael knew where to start. "I guess we could expand the property?" Amy asked tentatively a few days later. Rachael, who had grown quite fond of the horses since buying this small property, agreed. "Amy. I have an idea that will change your life." At Amy's silence, she continued. "We should start a professional stable for breeding and training horses." Amy's eyes shone as she understood what Rachael was
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 19Sarah and Amy sponged off the sweat marks from their horses. Amy quickly changed out of her show clothes into a pair of cut-offs and an old tank top. She mounted Dodge bareback and lay on his neck to hug him. Now that it was the afternoon, the western events were going on, and the English warm up arenas were pretty much empty. Amy weaved her way through the crowd, now consisting mostly of stock horses in western tack, towards the warm up arena. The jumps were set to 2' 9" and Amy decided that that height would be fine for some bareback jumping. After a few rounds of that Dodge was starting to sweat again, so Amy decided to cool him off while watching the western events. Almost immediately she noticed the sorrel stallion and Dustin near the cutting pens. She walked over, mildly curious. The herd of cows was released and Amy watched as Dustin lengthened the reins until there was almost no contact with the bit and the horse was able to freely move. He picked a cow away from the rest and k
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 18Amy's class was the last that the girls had signed up for. This time Amy didn't have to go first so she was able to see what the other horses and riders had trouble with on the course. The most common problem was the huge brightly painted jump in the middle of the arena. Amy figured that Dodge probably wouldn't spook at that one like the others, because he was pretty much bombproof. As she entered the arena to begin her course, she noticed Dustin leaning against the fence next to Sarah and watching her. Amy frowned, puzzled, and then pushed that thought out of her mind as she headed toward the first jump. Amy turned out to be right about the scary jump. Dodge didn't even bat an eye at it. He jumped it with inches to spare, as well as all of the other jumps in the arena. When the judge called her name on the loudspeaker for first place, Dodge pranced up to receive it. He raised his head proudly as a gust of wind caused the ribbon to twirl around his head.
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 17As she was walking back to the arena with her yellow, third place ribbon, the sorrel horse from the trailer beside her looked up and pinned his ears at Dodge. In response Dodge bared his teeth and pawed at the ground. "Hey" Amy said sharply, "Stop that, mister!" At her voice a head popped out form the other side of the trailer, and a boy about eighteen or so strode over to the sorrel horse. He smiled apologetically. "Sorry about him. He likes to posture to other stallions, but he's real nice if he knows you." He shook his dirty blond hair and grinned. "So who's this big guy?" He gestured to Dodge. Amy dismounted and said "This is Dodge," she replied, offering a half smile. This guy seemed friendly enough. "What kind of horse is he," she asked the boy. "He's a paint, but the poor guy doesn't have his color", he answered with an exaggerated frown.
At that moment Sarah trotted over on whisper from the practice arena. Hardly stopping to even nod at the boy and his paint horse, she said exc
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 16The next hour or two passed smoothly. Dodge had earned two blue ribbons and another second place, and Whisper had earned her first blue ribbon in a walk/trot equitation class. Sarah was ecstatic. The next class was a jumping class that Amy had entered Doge and herself in. She quickly re-tightened his girth and mounted. By the time she got to the arena and memorized the course Dodge had gotten excited. He loved to jump and knew that these 3' jumps were going to be no problem. She trotted into the arena and quickly set off at the left lead canter. The first jump was painted a dull off white and Dodge hopped over it lazily. Amy gave him a quick tap with her crop to tell him to focus and after that he jumped every one with inches to spare. On the last jump the loudspeaker cracked and startled Dodge, causing him to jump long. His back hooves clipped the jump bar and Amy groaned in frustration as she heard it hit the ground. Over all, it wasn't one of their best runs to put it lightly. Even
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 15Amy and Dodge were in one of the first classes of the day, just a simple walk, trot, and canter class to warm her horse up for jumpers. Amy calmly mounted Dodge, who would be going by his show name, Hit It Hard, today. As she trotted towards the arena, she noticed a big truck with mud splatters on the wheels pull up next to her trailer. She hoped that the horse inside would be nice to Whisper. Then her number was called and she walked into the arena along with the other 4 riders in her class. Dodge behaved perfectly, of course, and finished in second place. He was beaten only by a short horse whose movements were a bit prettier. As Amy trotted back to their trailer, interested to see what kind of horse was next to them, she passed Sarah leading Wild Whisper through the crowd. Amy quickly promised to come watch their class as soon as Dodge was tied up. Stealing a glance at the big trailer next to her, Amy saw a sorrel stock horse with a flaxen mane next to them. He was tacked in a nice
The (Ongoing) Story of Star Fyre Stables - Part 14On the day of the show Amy woke early to groom both horses to perfection, then loaded them into the trailer and waited for Sarah to drive over. Sarah arrived and thanked Amy for grooming Whisper, and then they both got into the truck and drove the short distance to the show grounds. It was obvious that Dodge remembered the showing routine, as he stepped confidently out of the trailer. He swished his tail and whinnied. A few other horses whinnied back. Whisper on the other hand looked terrified at all of the noise and commotion and for a moment Amy was worried that bringing her wasn't such a good idea. But soon the mare calmed down as Dodge stood next to her, comforting her with little horse snorts and nickers. Amy and Sarah laughed. It almost seemed like he was telling her how a show worked.
